Causes

The causes of deaths at wilderness therapy camps are complex and varied, but can be broadly categorized into three main areas: physical challenges, emotional stress, and abuse or neglect.

Physical challenges are a major risk factor for death at wilderness therapy camps. These challenges can include exposure to extreme weather conditions, difficult terrain, and dangerous wildlife. Regulation

The regulation of wilderness therapy camps is an important step in preventing deaths at these programs. Licensing and inspection can help to ensure that camps are meeting minimum safety standards and that staff are properly trained. However, there is still a need for more oversight of these programs.

One of the challenges in regulating wilderness therapy camps is that they are often located in remote areas, making it difficult for state inspectors to visit them regularly. In addition, some camps may be operated by religious or spiritual organizations, which may make them exempt from certain regulations. As a result, it is important for parents to do their research before sending their child to a wilderness therapy camp.

Here are some tips for parents:

Ask about the camp's safety record.
Read reviews of the camp from other parents.
Visit the camp in person before sending your child.
Talk to your child's doctor about the risks and benefits of the program.

By taking these steps, parents can help to ensure that their child is safe at a wilderness therapy camp.

This includes assessing their physical and mental health, as well as their ability to cope with the challenges of the program. In some cases, participants may not be appropriate for wilderness therapy, and they should be referred to a more appropriate program.
More training for staff: Staff at wilderness therapy camps need to be properly trained in order to provide a safe and supportive environment for participants. This training should include topics such as first aid, CPR, and wilderness survival skills. Staff should also be trained in how to recognize and respond to signs of distress in participants.
Closer supervision of activities: Activities at wilderness therapy camps should be closely supervised by staff. This includes activities such as hiking, camping, and swimming. Staff should be present to ensure that participants are safe and that they are following the rules of the program.
